There is loads happening across Brent this October. Of-course, October is Black History Month, where we celebrate the positive contributions of Black people in Brent and beyond. The theme this year is reclaiming narratives. On Wednesday, 23 October 2024, we will celebrate Black excellence, culture, and history. Prepare to be inspired as we honour the vibrant achievements of the Black community, featuring fashion, music, and thought-provoking conversations.
October is also the month where we receive an update on the council’s budget position at the next Cabinet meeting. Like the vast majority of local authorities, Brent is facing an extremely challenging financial situation. One of the issues that is putting extra pressure on the council’s budget is the spiralling levels of homelessness. Even though Brent has been leading the way in building new homes, our supply cannot cope with the huge increase in people coming to the council asking for help. If you know someone who may potentially be at risk of homelessness, or if you may be affected, please do start talking to the council early. Read more on homelessness prevention here
October also sees the latest round of Brent Connects forums where you can connect with your local councillors and neighbours to discuss key issues in your neighbourhood and share ideas for positive change. More details of the sessions are available on the links below.
And finally, National Hate Crime Awareness Week is coming up in mid October. This is an opportunity to tackle the issue of hate crime in our community. Brent is a proudly diverse borough a place where people from all across the world have chosen to come together and call home. We are a borough of hope, not hate. During the week, we want to celebrate this diversity and explore how we can do even more to ensure everyone feels safe and welcome here.
